IQOS TEREA Smooth Regular Japan

Smooth Regular is the lightest plain tobacco in the Japanese TEREA range. If Regular felt heavier than you wanted, or you are moving across from a light cigarette, this is the stick that makes the transition comfortable rather than jarring.

The flavour, honestly

Mild and slightly sweet, with the roasted note pulled well back. There is a faint creaminess on the exhale that the stronger regulars do not have. Nothing here fights you.

The trade-off is that heavy smokers often find it thin. If you were on twenty full-flavour cigarettes a day, this will feel like not enough, and that frustration is the usual reason people move up rather than down the range.

Who should buy this instead of Regular

Regular is the default recommendation for a reason: it suits the broadest range of people. Smooth exists for two specific cases. First, light smokers who find standard tobacco sticks harsh. Second, people who smoke a lot through a day and want something that does not fatigue the palate by the afternoon.

Want mildness with more going on? Balanced Regular keeps things even without being as light. Want cooling instead of strength? TEREA Mint is the gentlest of the menthols.

The wider Regular family

Japan's regular tobacco line runs five deep: Smooth, Regular, Rich Regular, Balanced Regular and Ruby Regular. They share the same base and step up in strength and body from Smooth at the mild end to Rich at the full end, useful to know if this one turns out too light or too heavy.

Device fit and handling

Induction only, which means the ILUMA family and the Lambda i8. It will not heat in an IQOS 3 DUO or any other blade device, because there is no blade contact involved in how TEREA works.

Twenty per pack. Because these are lighter, people tend to smoke slightly more of them, so a pack often runs closer to two days than three. Worth factoring in when you order.

Using it, start to finish

Insert one stick into the ILUMA holder, wait for the ready signal, then draw. A session runs about six minutes or fourteen puffs, whichever comes first. There's no way to extend a single stick beyond that, so pacing the draw is what gets the full session out of it.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• The easiest transition from light cigarettes of anything in the Regular family
• Doesn't fatigue the palate across a long day of smoking

Cons:

• Heavy smokers often find it too thin, Regular or Rich Regular suits them better
• No cooling or fruit option in this specific stick
