IQOS TEREA Black Purple Menthol Japan

Black Purple Menthol is the heavyweight of the Japanese fruit menthols: dark berry, intense cooling, and a roasted tobacco base underneath doing more work than most fruit sticks bother with.

All three layers pulling

Berry arrives first and it is the darker end of berry, closer to blackcurrant and blackberry than anything red. The menthol behind it is properly cold rather than a suggestion. And the base is roasted well past standard, which is what stops the whole thing tasting like a sweet.

It is a lot. That is the point, and it is also why this suits an evening stick rather than an all-day one.

The lighter version

Purple Menthol is the same berry idea over a standard base with gentler cooling. If Black Purple is too much, that is where to go, and most people who find their way here started there.

Black Menthol keeps the dark base and the intense cooling but drops the fruit entirely. Choose between them on whether you want sweetness in the mix.

Who this suits

Experienced TEREA smokers who want the heaviest, most intense stick in the Japanese range. Not a place to start if you're new to TEREA.

Compatibility

ILUMA, ILUMA i, Lambda i8. The IQOS 3 DUO and every other blade device are out, since TEREA heats from an element inside the stick.

Twenty sticks a pack. Between the dark roast and the fruit, this is among the heavier sticks on residue, so a clean holder makes a noticeable difference to how it tastes.

Storage and freshness

Keep packs out of direct heat and sunlight. A hot car in Dubai does more damage to flavour than months on a shelf indoors. A sealed pack holds its character for as long as it takes to work through a carton.

Using it, start to finish

Insert one stick into the ILUMA holder, wait for the ready signal, then draw. A session runs about six minutes or fourteen puffs, whichever comes first. There's no way to extend a single stick beyond that, so pacing the draw is what gets the full session out of it.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• Three distinct layers (dark berry, strong cooling, roasted base) instead of one note
• The most distinctive stick in the whole Japanese range

Cons:

• Genuinely heavy, not a stick to start TEREA with
• Japan-only, and among the heavier sticks on holder residue
