IQOS TEREA Purple Menthol Japan

Purple Menthol puts berry over cooling: darker and rounder than the citrus variants, sweeter than plain menthol, and one of the most reordered sticks in the Japanese range among people in Dubai who came across from flavoured cigarettes.

Berry, then cold

The fruit reads as dark berry rather than anything bright, closer to blackcurrant than strawberry. Menthol follows it rather than leading, which keeps the sweetness in check and stops the stick becoming cloying over fourteen puffs.

The tobacco base is standard rather than dark, so despite the fruit this is a mid-weight stick rather than a heavy one.

Purple or Black Purple?

The names cause confusion constantly. Black Purple Menthol runs the same berry direction over a much darker, more roasted tobacco base and with more intense cooling. It is the heavier version of this stick.

Start here if you want berry and cooling in balance. Move to Black Purple if you find this too light. For fruit that goes bright rather than dark, Tropical Menthol is the alternative.

What it fits

ILUMA and ILUMA i devices, plus the Lambda i8. No blade-heated holder can use TEREA of any kind.

Twenty a pack, about six minutes or fourteen puffs a session. Fruit-forward sticks tend to leave more residue on a holder over time, so if flavours start blurring together the device is usually due a look.

Storage and freshness

Keep packs out of direct heat and sunlight. A hot car in Dubai does more damage to flavour than months on a shelf indoors. A sealed pack holds its character for as long as it takes to work through a carton.

Using it, start to finish

Insert one stick into the ILUMA holder, wait for the ready signal, then draw. A session runs about six minutes or fourteen puffs, whichever comes first. There's no way to extend a single stick beyond that, so pacing the draw is what gets the full session out of it.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• Menthol follows the berry rather than leading, so it doesn't turn cloying over a full stick
• Mid-weight base keeps it from feeling heavy despite the fruit

Cons:

• Less intense than Black Purple Menthol if a stronger version is what you want
• Japan-only release
