IQOS TEREA Ruby Regular Japan

Ruby Regular is the most characterful plain stick in the Japanese TEREA range: roasted coffee, a sweeter tobacco base, and a thread of spice running underneath. It is not a flavoured stick, but it is a long way from neutral.

Three things happening at once

The coffee note arrives first and is unmistakable. Underneath it the tobacco runs sweeter than the other regulars, which keeps the coffee from turning bitter. The spice sits right at the back and is easy to miss until you go back to a plain stick and notice its absence.

All of which makes this a stick people either adopt permanently or dislike immediately. Very few are indifferent to it.

Against the other full-bodied regulars

Rich Regular is the comparison most people make, and the two are genuinely different. Rich is dark and dry, all roast, no sweetness. Ruby is sweeter, more layered, and finishes longer.

Warm Regular shares the idea of adding character to a plain base but does it with a nutty note and far more restraint. If Ruby sounds appealing but too much, Warm is the gentler version of the same instinct. Smooth Regular sits at the opposite end entirely, mild rather than characterful.

Compatibility

ILUMA, ILUMA i and Lambda i8, all induction. No blade-heated device including the IQOS 3 DUO can heat TEREA.

Twenty per pack, roughly fourteen puffs a stick. The coffee note comes through most clearly on the first few puffs, so drawing slowly at the start gets more out of it than rushing.

Using it, start to finish

Insert one stick into the ILUMA holder, wait for the ready signal, then draw. A session runs about six minutes or fourteen puffs, whichever comes first. There's no way to extend a single stick beyond that, so pacing the draw is what gets the full session out of it.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• Distinct coffee-and-spice character, not neutral like most plain-tobacco sticks
• Long finish, and the most talked-about stick in the Regular family

Cons:

• Polarising, people tend to love it or avoid it entirely, little middle ground
• Not a good first TEREA; start with Regular instead
