IQOS TEREA Tropical Menthol Japan

Tropical Menthol is the mango-forward stick in the Japanese TEREA range. Sweeter and fuller than the citrus variants, with cooling that supports the fruit instead of competing with it.

Mango, and what sits behind it

The mango is ripe rather than green, and it carries through the whole stick rather than fading after the first few puffs. There is a secondary tropical note underneath, closer to pineapple, that keeps the sweetness from going flat.

Cooling is moderate. This is not a stick you buy for the menthol; you buy it for the fruit and the menthol keeps it from becoming sickly.

Against the other fruit sticks

Yellow Menthol is the light, dry, citrus alternative and the better choice in real heat. Purple Menthol goes darker with berry. Tropical is the sweetest and fullest of the three.

If you like this profile, the Indonesian range is worth a look. Its house style runs sweeter throughout, and several variants take the tropical direction considerably further than the Japanese line does.

Who this suits

Anyone who wants fruit to be the main event rather than a background note, and doesn't mind sweetness building up over a full pack.

Device fit and pack life

ILUMA, ILUMA i and Lambda i8 only. TEREA will not heat in an IQOS 3 DUO.

Twenty per pack, roughly fourteen puffs a stick. Sweeter sticks build residue faster, so expect to notice a difference in taste if the holder has not been cleaned in a while.

Storage and freshness

Keep packs out of direct heat and sunlight. A hot car in Dubai does more damage to flavour than months on a shelf indoors. A sealed pack holds its character for as long as it takes to work through a carton.

Using it, start to finish

Insert one stick into the ILUMA holder, wait for the ready signal, then draw. A session runs about six minutes or fourteen puffs, whichever comes first. There's no way to extend a single stick beyond that, so pacing the draw is what gets the full session out of it.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• Mango flavour carries through the whole stick instead of fading after a few puffs
• Cooling supports the fruit rather than competing with it

Cons:

• The sweetest stick in the Japanese range, the Indonesian range goes further if that's the goal
• Japan-only, so no cheaper region to shop around
