IQOS TEREA Black Menthol Japan

Black Menthol pairs intense cooling with a dark tobacco base, which is a harder combination to pull off than it sounds. Most strong menthols flatten whatever is underneath them. This one keeps both halves audible.

Two strong things, held in balance

The menthol arrives immediately and stays cold throughout. Underneath it the tobacco is roasted well past what the standard menthol variants use, which is what stops the stick tasting like pure cooling with nothing behind it.

The result is heavier than most people expect from a menthol. It suits evenings better than mornings, and it is not the stick to smoke twenty of in a day.

Black Menthol against the alternatives

TEREA Menthol has similar cooling over a standard base, so it is lighter overall and better for all-day smoking. This is the same cold with considerably more tobacco behind it. TEREA Mint is the gentlest of the three, a reasonable starting point if Black Menthol turns out too much.

Black Purple Menthol takes the dark base in a fruitier direction with berry on top. If you want the weight but find plain menthol monotonous, that is the one to try next.

Compatibility and use

ILUMA, ILUMA i and Lambda i8. Blade devices including the IQOS 3 DUO cannot heat TEREA, because the heating element sits inside the stick rather than being pushed into it.

Twenty a pack. Given the intensity, most buyers here treat it as a second pack alongside something lighter rather than their only stick.

Using it, start to finish

Insert one stick into the ILUMA holder, wait for the ready signal, then draw. A session runs about six minutes or fourteen puffs, whichever comes first. There's no way to extend a single stick beyond that, so pacing the draw is what gets the full session out of it.

Pros and cons

Pros:

• A genuinely rare combination, strong cooling that doesn't flatten the tobacco underneath
• More tobacco character than a standard menthol stick

Cons:

• Heavy, not built for an all-day carton
• Too intense as a first menthol; start with Mint or standard Menthol instead
